During the early Empire, this generally private funeral sermon became an essential part of honours shown to Roman officiais of high rank during a State funeral. The lau¬ datio funebris not only had considérable influence on the development of the younger Suetonian biography, but it also continued to exist in Chri¬ stian Rome, for there was a deep-seated custom to honour important persons after their death, by a biography. The direct successor of the laudatio funebris, still known by the close of the 4th Century, was the biography of a bishop. This expresses the growing authority which the bishops exercised in the provinces, comparable to officiais of high rank. Both the bishops and the officiais often were members of the samedynasty. Although some impression was made by biographies of ascetics (c. A. D. 400), which were promoted too by the Upper classes, lives of bishops became dominant in the biographical literature in Gaul throughout the 5th and 6th centuries. During this time, they were the model for innu- merable subséquent hagiographical-biographical texts. So the author not only lays stress on the pre-Christian, Roman, and actually political origins of this Christian kind of literature, but also obtains new criteria for the interprétation of numerous hagiographical texts. The abundance and the authenticity of the information to be found in the biographies of bishops on the history of the 5 th and 6th centuries, and of the fol- lowing centuries as well, can be increasingly useful for historical research beyond church-history and the history of worship. The same can be said of the bibliography given in this periodi- cal. It is constantly brought up to date and in its subject matter is con¬ cerned with much more than just military history and the Second World Waritself. Abstract
