The German Historical Institute (GHI) in Rome was founded in 1888 under the name of “Royal Prussian Historical Station” following the opening of the Vatican’s archive and has a long, scientific history. It is the oldest of all German historic Institutes abroad. Today, its fields of focus lie within the examination of Italian and German history in the international context of the early middle ages until the present. Moreover, the institute has a department for music history focusing on the relationship of Italian and German music, its historical prerequisites and effects on Europe.
