The Foundation of German Humanities Institutes Abroad (DGIA) is the largest research organization dedicated to the humanities whose individual institutes are seated exclusively overseas. Disposing of an annual budget of approximately 36 million euro (2011) it is among the ten biggest German foundations of public law. The foundation reports to the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).
The Foundation of German Humanities Institutes Abroad promotes research projects with a focus on the humanities, social, and cultural sciences. Academic research is done locally. Currently, the foundation consists of ten individual institutes which are all completely independent with regard to their academic occupation. By means of its globally employed institutes, the Foundation of German Humanities Institutes Abroad accounts for an integral contribution to the settlement and networking between Germany and the hosting countries or rather regions. By stimulating academic communication as well as bringing together academic and non-academic associates from different countries and with various cultural backgrounds it strengthens the internationalization of research in the humanities, social, and cultural sciences.
