The Orient-Institut Istanbul, independent since 2009, is dedicated to research on the history as well as the languages, literatures and cultures of Turkey, Central and West Asia and Southeastern Europe. Fields of research are in particular: late Ottoman narrative sources and the diversity of 19th century Istanbul; Turkey as a country of immigration and emigration; Europeanization as an object of cultural practice, urban identity and local conflict; and new patterns of religiosity in Turkey and other Muslim societies. The Orient-Institut's researchers cooperate with several Turkish universities and cultivate academic exchange with scholars from Germany and abroad.
The Orient-Institut Istanbul disposes of an expanding research library with currently 37,000 volumes and 1,300 journals. The focus lies on Ottoman history and studies examining the present situation in Turkey. Besides its extensive stock of Turkish books, the library is also a valuable resource for research literature in German and other languages.
Furthermore, the institute regularly hosts conferences, workshops and lecture series. The Orient-Institut Istanbul publishes several academic series, such as the "Istanbuler Texte und Studien" (ITS) or the "Pera-Blätter". The institute offers scholarships to postgraduates and postdocs for research stays in Istanbul.
