The Orient-Institut Beirut (OIB) conducts and supports Near East and the Arab World related research on history and contemporary matters. Starting off from a historical and philological approach, the research projects at the Institute now cover such areas as the social sciences, political studies, religious studies, history and literary studies as well as philology. Collaboration with institutions and individuals in the region, as well as research on source material from the region are considered prerequisites in any viable project and constitute a common conceptual framework. Since 2009, the institute has an office in Cairo.
The institute has an important library (ca. 130.000 items) frequented by researchers from Lebanon and from abroad. It regularly employs six (post doc) research associates at Beirut, and a number of external researchers related to research projects. In addition, doctoral fellowships and short-term post-doc scholarships are available. Two book series are published by the Institute. One is dedicated to the critical edition of mostly Arabic manuscripts (Bibliotheca Islamica), the other publishes studies on history, society, politics and literature of the region (Beiruter Texte und Studien).
