The institute sees itself as an "on-the-spot" centre for research on Japan. Its tasks include cultural, economic, and social studies of contemporary Japan and research into and the documentation of Japanese-German relations. The DIJ organises international conferences, workshops and regular lectures open to the public. Every year it awards five to six  doctoral fellowships. The library of German language material on Japan currently comprises some 26,000 books and periodicals.
