Foto_Warschau_einheitsgroesse.jpgAfter 1989 the opportunity arose to set up a German Historical Institute also in East Central Europe. In choosing Poland the decision fell on a country with which Germany has always had not only an extremely close relationship, but also a particularly difficult relationship. The task of the German Historical Institute in Warsaw is to conduct research and studies on Poland’s history, German-Polish relations, issues on the comparative history of Poland and Germany and their historiography. The Institute’s field of work also includes Jewish history, which is an integral element in the history of both nations. It publishes the findings of research, editions of primary source texts and historical studies in both German and Polish. The Institute also organises many academic conferences and events, supports young academics with scholarships and colloquia, and provides an information service and academic contacts.
